Volunteer Roles
The success of every Virginia + DC FIRST LEGO League Explore event starts with our volunteers. Our region is lucky to have a strong network of dedicated community members, educators, parents, and program partners. Find out more about each volunteer role and how you can get started today!
*All training happens the day of the event.
Closing Ceremony
Assists with set-up and tear-down of auditoriums or halls used for closing ceremonies. Assists with the organized, controlled flow of traffic into and out of hall; assists with traffic control during awards presentation.
Benefits of the position:
– High visibility role
– Significant level or responsibility
– Provides an opportunity to contribute to the flow of the Festival
Required Skills and Experience:
– Ability to collaborate with others and work as a team
Floaters
Covers various roles based on needs as they arise including: registration, traffic control, messenger, and team escort. Floater may be reassigned if a volunteer does not show up or needs to leave due to an emergency or illness. This is a critical role.

Required Skills and Experience:
– Flexible, “go with the flow” attitude
– Ability to work as part of a team and be an effective communicator
– Ability to jump into a physically demanding role
Load In/ Out
Assists with set-up/load-in of Expo area as well as breakdown/load-out at end of day.

– Provides an opportunity to contribute to the success of the Festival flow
Required Skills and Experience:
– Physically demanding role; ability to stand for long periods of time
Reviewers
Reviews the teams’ models and Show Me Posters, then collaborates with other reviewers to assign awards to all teams. Will join other reviewers on stage at the closing ceremonies to hand out awards at High Fives.

Required Skills and Experience:
– Outgoing personality
– Strong assessment skills
– Strong interpersonal/communication skills
– Ability to effectively relate to youth aged 6-10 and be a role model at all times
– Knowledge of awards process
– Experience working with youth ages 6-10 and/or FIRST LEGO League Explore experience preferred
